We only use certified Fairtrade beans.
This means that the farmers who grow the beans are guaranteed a minimum price for the coffee they grow.
Without this system in place, the farmers find themselves at the mercy of 'free market forces' - which can end up forcing them to sell coffee beans for far less than it cost to grow them - all the while we sit in our little (or big franchised) First World cafes creaming every cent of profit we can.
We reckon that these 'free market forces' often don't really favour the little guy, and that it's obviously unfair to make a killing off a product that doesn't even provide a subsistence living for the people that grow it.
What's Fairtrade? We reduce our greed. The farmers make at least enough to live on. As the customer you pay an affordable price. To us that's a fair and sustainable way to trade.
